The Thomas Lovejoy Amazon Biodiversity Center (TLABC) is a 501(c)(3) with a mission to advance conservation and sustainable use of the Amazon and its biodiversity. We do this through:

  • Advancing collaborative scientific research, with a major focus on habitat fragmentation and restoration;

  • Building the next generation of leaders by training graduate students and offering short courses for students and mid-career professionals; and

  • Growing awareness among the general public, the world of policy, and the private sector both in and beyond the Amazon.

For more than 40 years, the Thomas Lovejoy Amazon Biodiversity Center has been a witness to how nature has been changing in the Amazon Rainforest, the most important global ecosystem.

 

The Thomas Lovejoy Amazon Biodiversity Center was founded in 2018 by world-renowned, American conservation biologist, Dr. Thomas Lovejoy to advance the preservation of the Amazon rainforest, conduct conservation research, and disseminate knowledge regarding the impact of human development and climate change on the diversity of the ecosystem, wildlife, and plant life of the Amazon. We protect the biodiversity of the Amazon by bridging the gap between conservation science and land management policy through two projects:

Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project: Scientists on our reserve near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil study Amazon Rainforest wildlife and ecosystems and the effects of human development and climate change on them. We work in cooperation with Brazil's National Institute for Amazon Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia; INPA).

Global Advocacy:  For 40 years, founder Dr. Thomas Lovejoy lent his expertise and perspective to decision makers seeking guidance on how best to preserve biological diversity in the Amazon and in rainforests worldwide.
